Iowa State defensive back David Sims was charged Tuesday with unauthorized use of a credit card stemming from a July 17 incident in Ames. Sims is suspended from the team after being charged Tuesday with unauthorized use of a credit card, according to the school’s student-athlete discipline policy.The charge, an aggravated misdemeanor, may be punishable by up to two years in jail and may include a fine between $625 and $6,250 under Iowa law.
“I have met with David about this incident and related my deep disappointment in his actions, which are not representative of a member of our football program,” coach Paul Rhoads said in a statement. “I have informed him he will face disciplinary action, which will be handled internally in the athletics department and within our football program. “In addition, he has been relieved of his position as a co-captain on our football team.”
Sims is suspended indefinitely, according to the school’s discipline policy for athletes. The code for first-infraction situations like Sims’ states that:
“The student-athlete shall be indefinitely suspended from competition and may be suspended from practice.” Rhoads could not be reached for comment on whether Sims will be allowed to practice, although he said Monday at the Big 12 Media Days that Sims remains on the depth chart. “Even with a worst-case scenario, he’s going to be on the team,” Rhoads said.Sims’ status for the Sept.2 season opener against Northern Illinois at Jack Trice Stadium is uncertain. Sims, last season’s Big 12 Conference defensive newcomer of the year, was a subject of an Ames Police Department investigation after Veronica Gonzalez of Des Moines reported her credit card stolen and used unlawfully July 17 in Ames. Authorities issued a search warrant for Sims’ Ames residence last Wednesday. The warrant was sealed. “There were some things recovered that were listed on the search warrant,” Ames Police Department commander Mike Brennan said last week. Ames police sent their findings to Story County Attorney Stephen Holmes’ office. Sims led the 7-6 Cyclones with five interceptions. He also forced three fumbles. Neither Sims nor his attorney, Matthew Bowles of Des Moines, could be reached for comment. According to courts on-line, Sims is scheduled to appear in Story County District Court on Monday. Iowa State’s annual football media day is Wednesday.
