A 16-year-old boy from Iowa was arrested following a hit-and-run accident in a crosswalk near Saint Marys Hospital that sent four people to the hospital Friday. The accident happened at Second Street Southwest and 14th Avenue Southwest. According to Rochester police and eyewitnesses, the suspect was driving west on Second Street Southwest. The driver made a quick left turn onto 14th Avenue Southwest, hit the side of a truck, then hit at least two pedestrians, and sped away. The teen might be charged with leaving the scene of an injury accident and criminal vehicular operation, according to Lt. Jeff Stillwell. The conditions of the victims weren't released Friday evening. Stillwell said their names would be released Saturday. A witness followed the suspect's car and reported its location to police. Officers stopped the car at U.S. 52 and Marion Road.Anthony Hahn was driving the truck that was hit by the suspect. He said he was eastbound on Second Street Southwest, and didn't see the suspect's car coming. After his truck got hit, he saw the other driver hit two women in the crosswalk.
"I thought, 'Oh my God, I can't believe that just happened,'" Hahn said.
At least one pedestrian dove out of the way of the car.
Ann Wittlief watched the accident unfold. She said the pedestrians had gotten halfway into the intersection when the car hit them."I heard a big thud, and they were on the ground," she said. Rochester police investigators believe that accident was due to driver inexperience and inattention caused by talking on a cell phone.
One of two things I suggest: He either plays too much Grand Theft Auto or didn't hear about Oprah's "No Phone Zone!"
